Landscape Panaroma

Panaromas are used more frequently in photography in modern times. It is especially good for landscape photographs, this is because not all of the scenery can fit on the normal frame of the photo on usual terms. Usually the landscape is quite vast, meaning a pan aroma can come in handy to get the full view of the scenery. For most panoramas, it's best to shoot with your camera mounted to the tripod on level ground, that way you'll have plenty of room to crop the top and bottom of your stitched image. A panaroma can be created without a tripod but if there is a bit of unnecessary  movement then the photo might not turn out the way it is supposed to. The idea of a panaroma is to create an image that is shot by moving your camera 180 degrees from the start of your image to the end and to make it flat so that it looks like it is shot from straight on, when in fact it has been photographed from around you.

For my Panaroma shoot i chose to do it in the amphitheater in college grounds. This is merely because it is the most interesting part of the college grounds because it looks like a history packed theatre. I shot the panorama 180 degrees, however we had to delete the last part of it on the right hand side because it didn't fit in well with the rest of the photo. If i was to do this shoot again i would do it using a tripod so that the shoot is more accurate on on the same height level. Other than that i am happy with my photo because i picked the right weather conditions to go out and do the photo in.

Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times minuscule. Landscape photographs usually capture nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes. 

The difference between an urban and a rural landscape is mainly due to man made structures. Urban Landscapes are usually created by man made buildings and structures.
Human settlements are classified as rural or urban depending on the density of human-created structures and resident people in a particular area. Urban areas can include town and cities while rural areas include villages and hamlets.


Landscape Photography requires a variety of different considerations when shooting work. Lighting and time of day are crucial for photographers and is there difference between an average photo and a phenomenal photo. The right time of day is what creates the setting in the photo. For e.g a sunset photo is no good if it is shot 20 minutes before the peak time where the sun is on the horizon.

Benoit Photography

Benoit challenges the conventions of landscapes by using a big square blog of light and uses that in the middle of the photo. This square block of light is made by using loads of LED lights that are put into a large sized net which is then hung up in the centre of the photo to make the light the centre of attention. I find this work interesting because its something out of the ordinary and it catches your eyes from the off because it is bright.

For my Landscape photography shoot i chose to do it in the amphitheater because it is an open area that is full of history and is a great place to photograph a shoot. To challenge the perspectives of my shoot i chose to shoot this photo with a blurred effect. To do this i shot the photo on manual and turned the lens so that the focus of the lens was short range so that it gave a blurred effect. This challenges the perspectives because 99% of photographs are taken with the main object of the photo in clear focus whereas this is taken with everything out of focus.

I also decided to do a photo with the photo being highly over-exposed, by doing this the photo will be mostly highlighted in white areas. This challenges the perspectives because a highly over-exposed photo is usually considered a bad photo but because i am trying to be different with my photos this would be seen as creative. If i was to do this shoot again i would do my photos in landscape instead of portrait to get all of the theatre in the shot.

Harold Edgerton

Harold edgerton is well known in photography for his use of "speedlight" to stop motion on film. His images have a surreal effect in that he merely freezes time in a photograph. I like his work because i think he likes to show people photos of things that do not appear to the human eye because it is too fast. For e.g. the photo above shows cranberry juice dropping into milk. Not many people would think to do a photo like this but just a simple idea like this can be more effective than complicated ideas.

Lynn Brown 

Lynn Brown likes to create stores in her still life photography. Each photo with a different story or meaning behind it. This photo illustrates the new life that has to be forged by those left behind after someone dies. The damp cards signify the support of friends, and the many tears shed. I like her work because it shows that a simple idea that has been thought out can create a story of someones past or the story of life as this photo does.

Generating Ideas

For this shoot we were asked to go out and photograph creative portraiture photos for our project. The project title is called Challenging Perspectives. The idea of this project is to concentrate on challenging the normal ideas and methods usually used in portrait photos. For e.g. you could change the composition of photos so could shoot the photo from side on or do something unusually creative with the composition of the photo. 

The techniques i used are shown in my photos. I like the fact that the photos are completely different.  

For this photo i like the fact that the model looks like his body is in the bin and i think it gives it a creative and unusual look. I like that the color change is dramatically different from top to bottom in this photo. It starts of as just a grey bin which could make the photo look bleak, however then color starts appearing from various places that make the photo look attractive. 

For the two next photos i have used the use of color to generate a colorful scene that would draw peoples attention straight to the photo. I like the fact that the model looks like he is actually in the photo, it makes it look as though he is peering out of the cave hole onto the beach. The use of luminous colours in this photo make the photo look highly attractive and would get the viewers attention straight way. 

For this photo i chose to shoot it from side on. I approached my model and asked if he could still on a table and focus on the camera lens. The color of the models hoodie bring out the attraction in the photo. I think that if the model was wearing a dull coloured hoodie then the photo wouldn't be as attractive. If i was to do this shoot again i would try and do it were i had more time to do the shoot so that i could plan for the shoot to make the most out of the time. I would also try and be more creative. I like the first 3 photos but i would argue that the last photo isn't as creative as the other 3.

To push the conventions of a portrait i could use a lens that isn't used anymore or i could use a disposable camera and break the lens. This would be to add a cracked effect to every picture which would be pushing the conventions to the limits. I think burning a lens would also be effective because every photo would have a burnt effect. Another idea is to wet the lens with water or condensate the lens to experiment with different effects.

For my Project i plan to do Portraiture work that will be shot possibly under high key lightning. This is because i want to shoot my photo on a white or coloured background from the waist upwards because the clothing is important in the photo. I Plan to do my photo shoot in the studio in college because it has all of the equipment that will be necessary to do a successful shoot. My theme for the project of challenging perspectives is to get a male model and get him to wear women's accessories which would probably be a bra and get him to put it over the top of his clothing. This challenges the perspectives because it is out of the ordinary to see a man wearing a women's clothes. I think the model would look good in a tshirt whilst wearing the women's clothing.

There was a few photographers that influenced my project ideas. The first photographer was Diane Arbus. She photographed a man wearing women's rollers and wearing fake nails as a transgender shoot. I would argue that she wanted to create the point of gender equality and that each person is to their own. The second photographer that influenced my work was Nan Goldin. She photographed two males in a car dressed up in women's clothing with dyed hair, which one was only wearing a bra on their upper half of their body. These two photographers are were i got the idea of switching clothing from different genders. I didn't want to make a shoot quite as deliberate as these photographers did because i wanted just a slight change with the models clothes on. To do a successful shoot i will need the following equipment:

• 2 Soft Boxes
• Reflective dish
• Camera
• Coloured backdrop. 

For the shoot i will need certain props to set the scene for the shoot. These will include:

• Women's headband
• Bra
• Skirt

Without these props the idea of mixing the persons gender with the opposite genders clothing would be pointless because these props are what make the shoot challenge the perspectives.

Comparing Photographers

David Bailey

Richard Avedon

These two photographers photograph in a similar way in the way that they are both portrait photographers that shoot in black and white. Both of the photos are shot from straight on which is crucial in portrait photography. Even though the photos are both in black and white, the lighting on each of the photos is different. In David Baileys photo, there is a lot more shadow around his face. However this is partly because Johnny Depp has his hands raised which causes more shadow around the face. 

The different expressions on each of the models face determine the emotion and feelings of the viewer. David Baileys photo of Johnny Depp could create the emotion of curiosity because its difficult to determine what impression the model is trying to portray to the viewers.

The Richard Avedon photo is quite different in the facial expressions of the model. I would argue that  it attracts viewers in the essence that his eyes are the very first thing you see when you look at the photo. This is because he's opening his eyes and it gives the feeling of shock and stare as if the model is actually looking at you. The glasses add a great effect swell i would argue because without the glasses i don't think the photo would look quite as effective.

The lighting in Avedons photo looks illuminated with the white background because it draws the attention to the eyes. With a dark background, although it would also create a sense of shock and wonder, it wouldn't be as effective. There is limited shadows on this models face because the photo is shot from straight on which means that the light captures his face to demolish all of the shadows.
